This imposing structure had very clear function to keep enemies out, and impose rule. It’s purpose similar in design and phycology to the medieval castles of Wales but built 1000 years prior. The very large rocks at the base are Herodic and later editions to the tower are from the Ottoman period. What’s really interesting about this building’s architecture like most ancient structures in Jerusalem is that the stones seem to always be large at the base and decrease in size as more modern editions were added. Most large tours of people that arrive at the tower’s entrance appeared to be accompanied by youthful males and females fashioning bright sports shirts, short shorts and assics with modern assault rifles. I just could not get my head around it, kids with guns. Legitimately employed to carry military grade weaponry and casually misbehaving and joking with each other.
