Golden Gate, Jerusalem © 2017

The Golden Gate, as it is called in Christian literature, is the only eastern gate of the Temple Mount and one of only two that used to offer access into the city from that side. It has been walled up since medieval times. According to Jewish tradition, the Shekhinah (Divine Presence) used to appear through the eastern gate, and will appear again when the Anointed One (Messiah) comes. A narrow walkway led through a concrete and unkept graveyard, It was surprisingly secluded by this ancient gate. Once I found the location to paint from as I dusted off the wall I noticed an empty bullet casing, this instantly reminded me of the violent history of the city. This influenced my pallet choice to be more sinister and apocalyptic. Further to that while sketching I was being intensely observed from a guard situated on top of the gate.
